If they don't stay on, I'll probably cut the retainers off and just have loose caps or contact Alpen and see if they have a better solution for me. I may take to putting another rubber band or some sort of tacky adhesive on them. The front lens caps fit well but the band that retains them on the binos is a bit loose. Beyond that they seem quite solid and as well built as almost any decent binocular you can buy today.Ĭomes with a case and a belt holster thing. The focus knob has a little play in that when you start turning it, the focus mechanism doesn't move right away. The screw in/out eyecups are a bit rattly when you try to set them in the detents but they don't rattle (yet) when shaken or vibrated. These seem to have a bit of pin cushion distortion but it's not disorienting and it may just be the edges and wider FOV than my reference. Having said that, these seem to have very neutral contrast, the Nikons are pretty neutral and Leica as far as I recall definitely have a flavor. I'm not sure how much contrast really has to do with ability to magnify things well and discern colors properly.

The Nikons seem to go soft overall with light going in them and the Alpens seem to block out the portion opposite the light source a bit if that makes any sense.Ĭontrast usually comes down to a personal taste issue and I'll just say they aren't a pretty as the Nikons, which weren't as pretty as the Leicas when I bought these.

I haven't tested these a lot, but I found the Alpens are flaring a bit more than the Nikons but with new binos, sometimes you just have to get used to holding them in the right place for your eyes so you're getting the full image circle. These so far seem to have the Nikons beat in CA, the CA on the Nikons is on the edges and while the Nikons may be sharper on the edges (afaict) the CA may affect the ability to discern subtle colors over sharp details. I'll have to spend more time with them to get a better feel for it. They "seem" a bit soft as you get outside the center 50% of the image but they also have a wider FOV so they may be equal. They are indiscernible if not better than the Nikons. I'm a wildlife biologist, birder, and photographer for the last 20 years so I think I have a pretty good idea what good glass is. They are great binos to compare these to. When I purchased the Nikons, they were considered the reference standard by many reviewers, equalling or surpassing comparable purchases from Swarovski, Leica, Zeiss, etc. I have a pair of Nikon Venture LX 8x24 to compare these to. I'll definitely be back after a few thorough field tests but I wanted to put my first impressions here.
